Dinusha T. Jayawardene is a Sri Lankan based Contemporary Artist who is also a lawyer by profession and has a passion towards charitable causes. She studied art at the famous Cora Abraham Art Class initially, and subsequently further developed her creative skills at the Sapumal Foundation.

Painting has always been her passion ever since childhood and it has not changed although many years have passed since then. Her journey in art interestingly depicts a shift from painting faces in a very modern way to just about anything abstract. Her artwork was featured in Jaggery- a DesiLit Arts and Literature Journal, in 2015.

Proceeds from the sale of her paintings will go towards opportunities to improve the lives of those with mental ill-health in Sri Lanka.

Dinusha speaks of her artistic journey in this interview.

Q: How would you explain your journey in painting?

A: It is a journey that's constantly evolving, as with every new canvas I paint on, I'm learning something. I have always used pallet knives to get different effects on the canvas. Recently, I'm learning how to use my fingers more creatively on the canvas, and it's been very intriguing.

Q: Can you explain why proceeds from the sale of your paintings are going to improve the lives of those with mental ill health in Sri Lanka?

A: I know what it's like to personally experience mental health issues and fully recover. I know that the stigma associated with mental ill-health prevents most people from seeking help. Globally, the field of mental health is evolving. Many years from now we may look back and be able to see how far we have progressed. But to do so, we need to put in the work now. This is why my paintings have a twist to it. Proceeds from the sale of the paintings will go to improve lives of those with mental ill-health in Sri Lanka.

Q: You've been very vocal and open about your personal experience with mental health issues. What would you say to someone who is apprehensive about 'coming out of the closet' and also advocating for mental health?

A: I would say to anyone who is in two minds about 'coming out of the closet', first, be okay with your story for yourself. Once you are, you will be able to embrace your personal experience and find ways to reach out and inspire others as well.

Q: Has painting helped you in any way, particularly in terms of mental health?

A: Yes. Painting is an outlet for me. It has helped me immerse myself in creativity, and to also express what's going on in my mind.

Q: For how long do you intend to paint and raise funds to improve the lives of those with mental ill health in Sri Lanka?

A: I intend to raise a substantial amount so that I could contribute towards attaining a sustainable objective in terms of improving the lives of those with mental ill-health in Sri Lanka. So, I will be painting for some time.

We wish her all the best in all her efforts and for her career.
